Today we are in the town of Great Barrington enjoying a zero day. It’s so good to be in town again and to have a day to take it easy and rest our feet and to enjoy good food and to enjoy staying dry! Again, it was a week with a fair amount of rain. We did enjoy a few sunny days though which we really enjoyed. At one point I remember saying to Lance “Babe, this is really fun today!” Unfortunately that’s not usually the way we feel on days where it just rains and rains. It did help this week that our feet stayed relatively dry for a few days which we were so grateful for! I’m determined not to let this trip make me forever dislike rain…I’ll just enjoy the rainy days a bit more when I can sit inside my cozy house and celebrate the rainy days with an extra cup of coffee instead!
This week we got 110 miles done and finished New York, went through Connecticut, and are now in Massachusetts. We are in the last four states now!! It seems like we are getting so close to the end but the reality is we still have close to 700 miles to do yet along with the roughest terrain.
A few pics from the week…
New York…we enjoyed hiking through our home state! It was pretty rugged, especially at the beginning but it was beautiful and we enjoyed it. I don’t really have a ‘favorite’ or ‘least enjoyed’ state. They are all a different experience…but NY probably ranked close to one of my ‘favorite’ states! In NY we went to the Trailside Zoo!! All the animals in the zoo were either orphaned or injured and were given a home there.Crossing the bridge….…over the Hudson River! (One of the places where we may have been closest to NYC)RPH shelter…we ordered Chinese food right to the shelter and had a fun evening hanging out and playing games! (Also, notice all the hoodies and coats? I can tell we are in the north because the evenings are much cooler. )We made it to Connecticut! We made it to Kent, CT for a resupply and got to a real grocery store so we enjoyed some ‘fancy’ food…bread, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese drizzled with olive oil.1400 miles!1500 miles! And a little bit of night hiking…We are covered in poison, bug bites, and more mosquito bites than I could count.Hello Massachusetts! We took refuge under this rock ledge to wait out a rainstorm!Saturday it POURED! The trail turned into a stream and up to mid-calf wading sometimes! Fortunately we were headed into town later in the day so the timing felt so perfect because we could dry everything out the next day while we take our zero.Back to hitch hiking again! In NY it’s illegal to hitch so we would stop by delis along the trail instead of going into town. Hitching in the north can be a little harder but we had a ride in 5-10 minutes. My dear man❤️ I may have had a few mini cry sessions this week due to some of the difficulties of ‘trail life’. He is so kind and patient with me and it’s so amazing having someone to share both the happy and difficult times with. My heart is so happy out here…I feel like this is the happiest I’ve ever been but it’s not with out the hard days. This life is so beautiful and I’m so happy we get to share it together.
